What do magic and writing have in common? How do both practices influence one another, and how can they ground us or remove us from our bodies? In this workshop we will probe the mystery of writing, a type of magic, with a focus on memoir and the power of conjuring our stories and transforming our experience of our own lives. Practical concerns such as authority and craft will share space will conversations about the somatic effect of writing memoir on a writer's body and psyche. This workshop will be beneficial for writers regardless of literary and magic experience! New material will be generated from prompts inspired by outside writing, tarot and other inspirations.

Michelle Tea is the author of numerous literary works across genre, including the cult classic memoir Valencia, the illustrated Rent Girl, the how-to Modern Tarot and the kids' book Astro Baby. Her essay collection, Against Memoir: Complaints, Confessions and Criticisms, was honored with the 2019 PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Memoir. She is the creator of the Sister Spit international performance tours, the Bay Area literary organization RADAR Productions, the online parenting zine Mutha and the global sensation Drag Queen Story Hour. She curated the Sister Spit Books series for City Light Publishers and currently curates both the Amethyst Editions and Drag Queen Story Hour Books for The Feminist Press.

The Corporeal Center houses all of Corporeal Writing's Face2Face workshops, readings, and open community hours Tues through Friday, 12 - 4. We are located in a beautiful historic building in downtown Portland. We are on bus lines, close to the Max line that goes to the airport as well as the Amtrak station. We are within walking distance to many hotels, some of our favorites being The Society Hotel ($), Embassy Suites ($$), Hotel Monaco ($$) and The Nines ($$$). With a bar, delicious burger joint, fresh salad bar in our building, a food truck lot out the front door, and Pine Street Market only a 3 block walk, food options abound.
